interpreting special characters

description

I agree this project truly brilliant.
I have a problem reading the returned xml if it contains a < character (less than character).
It comes back as < which I can search and replace on -- but it also throws off the character positions of everything else on that line. So far, I haven't seen any problems with the other special characters like greater than, apostrophe, ampersand, etc... so maybe a tweak needs to take place to fix the less than.
I'm not afraid of tweaking the code myself, if someone could give me a suggestion.

Why does the character position on the line matter ? Regardless, you should be able to preserve character position by replacing "<" with " <", that is 3 spaces and then the < character.
